2-step verification FAQ
Keep your information and accounts better protected
While Progressive's customer information is heavily protected, we're taking additional measures to enhance data security. 2-step verification is one such enhancement that verifies customer identity, while only adding a few seconds of your time.
What is 2-step verification?
2-step verification is a new security measure from Progressive that will require an additional verification method when you log into your Progressive account. In addition to providing your user ID and password, a temporary code will be sent to you through text message or email that you'll then enter before accessing your account. This step adds an extra level of protection to your account, even if your password is compromised.
Why should I set up 2-step verification?
You should set up 2-step verification because it adds an extra layer of security to your Progressive account, making it much harder for hackers to gain access to your account even if they steal your password.
I've never done 2-step verification. How does it work?
It's easy. When 2-step verification is set up, it'll take two steps to log in to your account:
- Enter your user ID and password.
- We'll send you a one-time passcode by text message or email. Simply use the code to verify your identity while logging in.
If you're logging in through the Progressive mobile app, you'll have the option to skip entering the code by using the "Enable biometrics" feature.
What is a one-time passcode?
A six-digit numerical code we send you by text message or email that verifies your identity when logging in.
Why not use security questions like mother's maiden name, first pet, etc.?
Great question. Passcodes are a stronger form of security because the codes are randomly generated, sent only to your device, and expire within 10 minutes.
Ok, what are the steps to setting it up?
- Log in to your Progressive account.
- Click on the "Manage 2-step verification" link on your Account home screen or within your Account Preferences.
- Provide a phone number or email address where you would like to receive a one-time passcode each time you log in.
- Verify that phone number or email address by being sent a one-time passcode.
- Click "Continue" to complete set up.
Can I set up more than one phone number or email address to use to verify my identity?
Currently, we're only able to let customers set up 2-step verification with one phone number or one email address. Later this year, we'll be rolling out a feature to allow customers to set up 2-step verification for up to three phone numbers and/or email addresses.
Can I set up 2-step verification using something other than a one-time passcode?
Currently, we're only able to send a one-time passcode via email or text. However, cybersecurity technology is always evolving, and we'll continue to look for more ways to enhance our security measures and better protect your Progressive account. We'll keep you informed as more options become available.
What if I need to change my 2-step verification phone number or email address?
If you're no longer able to receive a one-time passcode at the phone number or email address that you set up 2-step verification with, please contact a Progressive customer service representative. For security reasons, customer service representatives are not able to change or update your 2-step verification phone number or email address. Instead, they'll need to unenroll you from 2-step verification and then you'll need to set it up again with your new phone number or email address. You can contact a customer service representative at 1-800-776-4737.
If you're able to receive a one-time passcode at the phone number or email address that you set up 2-step verification with and want to update that information, simply follow these steps:
- Log in to your Progressive account.
- Click on the "Manage 2-step verification" link on your Account home screen or within your Account Preferences.
- Click on "Edit verification method."
- Follow the prompts to update your phone number or email address.
Who can I contact if I have a problem?
If you're having trouble logging in because you exceeded the number of times to validate your one-time passcode, please wait 10 minutes and try again. If you're experiencing any other issues, you can contact a customer service representative at 1-800-776-4737.
